Western Lake is one of the rarest features on this stretch of coast — a coastal dune lake, a landform found almost nowhere else in the world outside of 30A. Framed by Grayton Beach State Park’s dunes and pine forest, its brackish, glassy water makes for one of the most peaceful ways to spend a morning on the trip.
Head to the park’s Western Lake boat ramp, where the ranger station rents kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards by the half-day or full day — no reservation needed, and prices are refreshingly simple. Paddle out early, when the water is at its calmest and the light is soft, and keep an eye out for herons, ospreys, and the occasional dolphin where the lake meets the Gulf.
It’s an easy, low-key adventure that doesn’t require experience — just sunscreen, water shoes, and a little patience for the paddle out. Pair it with a picnic on the sandbar where the lake breaks through to the beach, or simply drift and take in a piece of 30A that most visitors never slow down enough to see. A short drive from 30A Beachouse, and one of the best mornings you’ll spend on this trip.
